Cell Description: Human breast adenocarcinoma

Culture medium: EMEM (EBSS) with sodium bicarbonate, 2 mM L-glutamine, 1,0 mM sodium pyruvate, 1% NEAA and 10% FBS

Subculture routine: Split confluent cultures 1:2 to 1: 6 i.e. seeding at 2 x 10⁴ to 4 x 10⁴ cells/cm² using 0,25% trypsin or trypsin / EDTA;

Incubate at 5% CO₂, 37°C

Morphology: Epithelial

Biosafety Level: 1

Sterility: Tests for Mycoplasma, bacteria and fungi were negative

Karyotype: 2n = 46; hypertriploid to hypotetraploid

Comments: Established from the pleural effusion from a 69 year old female Caucasian. The cells exhibit some of the features of differentiated mammary epithelium including oestradiol synthesis. The cells may carry B or C type virus and should be handled in category 2 (P2) containment.
